The short version
UNIGET is a noticeboard. It lets students show each other what they are selling. Everything after that — agreeing a price, meeting, handing over money, carrying the thing home — happens between the two of you, and we are not part of it.
What we do not do
- We do not check people. Having an account means someone controls a University of Sheffield or Sheffield Hallam email address. That is all it means. It is not a background check, a reference, or a promise that they are honest.
- We do not check items. We have not seen the sofa. We do not know whether the kettle works, whether it is safe, or whether the person selling it owns it.
- We do not handle money. No payments go through UNIGET. There is no escrow, no buyer protection, and no refunds, because we never hold anything to refund.
- We do not deliver anything or take part in handovers.
So the risk is yours
If a deal goes wrong — the item is broken, the money never arrives, the person does not turn up — that is between you and them. UNIGET is free, run by one student, and is not in a position to compensate anyone for a bad transaction.
Nothing here removes rights you have under UK law that cannot be signed away. If a seller is acting as a business rather than clearing out their flat, consumer law may give you rights against them — but those are against them, not against us.
Meeting people sensibly
You will be going to a stranger’s flat, or having one come to yours. Tell someone where you are going. Look at the item before handing over money. If something feels wrong, leave.
If something criminal happens, contact the police on 999, or 101 if it is not an emergency. UNIGET cannot investigate anything and should not be your first call.
What we ask of you
- List only things you actually own and can hand over.
- Describe them honestly, including the damage. Photograph the real item, not one from the internet.
- Mark something sold as soon as it goes. Stale listings are the exact problem this exists to fix.
- Do not list anything illegal, dangerous, or that you are not allowed to sell — including recalled electrical goods and upholstered furniture without fire labels.
- Do not use someone’s contact details for anything other than the item they listed.
We can remove things
We can take down a listing or close an account if it breaks the above, or if it is making the place worse for everyone else. There is no appeals process; this is a student project, not a company.
If you see something wrong, use the report link on the listing.
Who runs this
A student at the University of Sheffield. UNIGET is not run by, endorsed by, or affiliated with the University of Sheffield. It is free, and it may stop working or shut down at any point.
